Importance of Library in Schools

The library occupies a very important place in school. Here they find an environment which is conducive to the building up of habit of self-learning. The library is the centre of the intellectual and social activities of the school. The library has got a very wholesome effect on the work of the school.

In a library, the atmosphere is very calm and disciplined. It helps students to keep concentration on their studies. Libraries are the only place where we are free from all convention because reading is a matter of personal choice.

A habit of reading can be cultivated. When students get practice in reading and reading habit in the beginnings are made firm and when the student is read which interests them and occupies their attention.

In the classroom, the book that is prescribed may not serve the purpose. Some students may not be in a position to purchase all books that they want to read, while others may not find books that are of interest to them.

Interest differ, aptitude varies, and individual capacities present a wide variation in students reading capacities. In the library, each has what they want, each goes with their own pace to which his/her capabilities allow him to go. The library is thus, a common platform upon which all student meet on a common level with equal opportunities. It is the nucleus of the school environment, the centre of the intellectual activities of the school.

A library is an important source of knowledge to young minds in schools. It develops the important habit of reading among the student. School library helps children to improve:-

Subject study:

It is the house of knowledge. In a library, students can find books on various subject such as history, geography, environment, political science, literature, etc.

A school library exhibits a positive impact on the academic achievement of the student. Student can perform better during examinations by reading various books.

Positivity:

Positive thinking sounds useful on the surface. But positive thinking is also and fluffy term that is easy to dismiss. In the real world, it rarely carries the same weight as words like work ethic or persistence.

Positive thinking is not a theoretical philosophy, but a way of life.

It can sound a bit disheartening that we must learn how to think positive because it’s not an innate skill. However, the good news is, you can learn the skill of positive thinking fast and easy.

Improve Skill Set:

Cognitive abilities are brain-based skills we need to carry out any task from the simplest to the most complex. They have more to do with the mechanisms of how we learn, remember, problem solve, and pay attention, rather than with any actual knowledge.

Creativity:

Creative thinking means looking at something in a new way. It is the very definition of “Thinking outside the box”. Reading book helps your kids to think “Outside the Box” and do new things.

Quick Thinking:

Quick thinking is the process in which you’ll get test your knowledge with a quiz. Reading more book help your kids to build a foundation for critical thinking.

As the proper use of the well-equipped school library is essential for the official working of every educational institution and for encouraging literary and cultural interests in students, every secondary school should have such a library. Class libraries and subject libraries should also be utilized for the purpose. The subject teachers can enrich their teaching greatly with the help of small collections of books in their subjects.

This should not be confined to textbooks only. Advance work, reference books, books on a related subject and allied field, all these will find a place in that collection. Most of the teachers. Have no idea of what a majority of student are reading or whether they are reading at all. So the commission recommended that a systematic register should be maintained. And each student must be allotted a few pages of the register in which all books studied by him are entered date wise.

Hence, the library is an essential part of the student’s life. They should take full advantages of the libraries available. A student should also remember that they should not misuse the library books by marking them with ink or tearing off their pages, required by the students. Library books must be kept properly.
